“I Want to Be That Person”

The power of feeling seen

It was an overcast, windy day - the kind that makes you zip your jacket a little higher and tuck your chin into your scarf. I had a bag full of Ploppals orders to mail, and for once, I was the one making the post office run. Usually that’s my husband’s domain. He’s the errand guy, the mail-drop guy. I tend to stay in - working from home, shipping joy out the door, often more isolated than I’d like to admit.

But on this day, I stepped into our small-town post office - the one with the dark wooden doors, the warm lighting, and a kind of lived-in coziness you don’t expect in a government building. The counter was lined with little trinkets and small gifts - left for the postmasters by community members over the years. The walls were dotted with posters for upcoming local musicals and theater productions.

Jack, the postmaster, looked up and smiled. “How are you, Heather! You look great. You just missed your dad — he was here 10 minutes ago.”

Just like that - a few words, a warm smile, a connection made.

I felt seen. Known. Rooted. As if I belonged not just in that moment, but in the wider fabric of the town, my family, and my life.

And as I walked back to my car with the wind tugging at my sleeves, I felt something I didn’t expect: lifted.

Jack didn’t fix anything. He didn’t do anything extraordinary.

But in those few words, he gave me something I didn’t know I needed.

And I thought: I want to be that person.
The one who sees someone.
The one who makes eye contact and smiles.
The one whose small gesture shifts the day.

That’s why Ploppals exists, really.

To be that little moment of light in someone’s day.

To remind people they’re not alone.

Whether it’s a plush pal in the mail, a kind card on the fridge, or a printable game that turns screen time into family time — it all comes down to that spark of connection.

We can’t fix everything. But we can smile. We can look up.

We can be the kind person who makes someone feel rooted, even if just for a moment.

And maybe — in doing that — we all feel a little more connected too.
